HNE Health Libraries receives 2026 Community Heritage Grant

HNE Health Libraries is pleased to be a 2026 Community Heritage Grants recipient, supporting the next stage of our Historical Collection Management project.

The grant will support specialist conservation training to strengthen the skills and knowledge required to care for HNE Health’s historical collections. Training will be delivered by a qualified conservator and will include:

  • Preventive Conservation and Collection Care, covering agents of deterioration, environmental risks, appropriate storage and practical strategies to reduce damage to paper-based materials, objects and textiles.
  • Safe Handling of Heritage Collections, focusing on techniques for safely handling, moving, storing and rehousing collection material.

The project responds directly to priorities identified through our Significance Assessment and Preservation Needs Assessment, including the need for formal collection-care training, consistent handling practices and collection-specific disaster preparedness.

The training will also support the safe relocation and rehousing of collection material into new, fit-for-purpose storage, helping ensure significant items are protected and appropriately managed for the future.

About the Community Heritage Grants program

The Community Heritage Grants program supports non-profit community organisations to preserve locally owned collections of national significance and improve their accessibility.

The program is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts; National Library of Australia; National Archives of Australia; National Film and Sound Archive; and National Museum of Australia.

For HNE Health Libraries, this funding represents another important step towards building a sustainable, district-wide approach to preserving HNE Health’s organisational history and heritage.
