Special Collections & Historical Archives

HNE Health Libraries preserves, documents and promotes the rich history of healthcare across Hunter New England. Through our Special Collections and Historical Archives, we ensure significant materials remain accessible for future generations of staff, researchers and the community.

HNE Health Libraries is committed to the identification, preservation, and promotion of historically significant and movable heritage materials, ensuring that the organisation’s history and contributions to healthcare are documented, protected, and accessible for future generations.

HNE Health Libraries have collections of historical value, archival and reference potential, and subject significance.
They include:

  • David Wallace Memorial Collection - This is a closed collection of beautifully bound books from ‘The Classics of Medicine Series’ donated to the Library by the medical Board of Royal Newcastle Hospital in memory of cardiologist, Dr David Charles Wallace, housed at the Mater Library.
  • John Irvine Hunter Collection - This is a closed collection of John Hunter’s private texts covering his childhood to his career choice in medicine and is housed at the Mater Library.
  • Historical collection - Consists of past circulating texts and donated items that are considered of significant merit. The continued growth and development of this collection depends upon donations and the transfer of items from the circulating collection when their content or historical significance determines such treatment. Also collected are pictorial materials illustrating persons or events of historical significance to HNELHD.
  • Historical artefacts - The Library holds a variety of historical artefacts reflecting its history in connection with Royal Newcastle Hospital, James Fletcher Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital. These include photographs, maps, devices, instruments, and other ephemera.
  • Pathology Museum and Newcastle Mater Hospital Memorabilia - This exhibition is on long-term loan and not owned by the library shows some of the equipment used to perform pathology tests prior to the introduction in the 1970s of automated electronic analysis of blood samples.

• Appropriate appraisal and acquisition decisions
• Preservation of organisational heritage across all locations of Hunter New England Local Health District
• Alignment with professional standards and NSW Health heritage obligations

What is Historical Significance?
Items are considered historically significant where they:
• Capture the evolution, culture, achievements, or impact of HNE Health
• Provide insight into healthcare practice and community history
• Have identifiable provenance and contextual value

What is Not Collected

The Library will generally not accept items that:
• Have no identifiable origin or connection to HNELHD
• Are routine or administrative documents without long-term value
• Are mass-produced items with no contextual significance
• Are damaged or unsafe with no historical relevance
• Are standard or duplicate textbooks (unless historically significant)

4.1 Definition
Provenance is the documented origin, ownership, and history of an item.

4.2 Policy Requirement
Items must have, or be capable of obtaining:
• Clear origin or ownership history
• Connection to HNE Health or regional healthcare
• Supporting contextual information (creator, date, use)

4.3 Importance
Provenance:
• Verifies authenticity and significance
• Enhances research value
• Ensures accurate cataloguing, interpretation, and preservation

Staff who identify a potential item should:

  • Contact the Library for review

7.2 Expression of Interest (EOI)

  • Capture of donor and item details

7.3 Assessment Criteria

  • Items are evaluated based on:

  • Relevance to HNE Health
  • Provenance and authenticity
  • Condition and preservation needs
  • Storage and resource implications
  • Legal and ethical considerations

7.4 Decision-Making

The Library will:

  • Accept, decline, or refer items
  • Provide advice on suitability and alternatives
  • Document all decisions
